Tips for Keeping the Air Fresh & Clean Inside Your Home

Blog

While a well-sealed home is great for your power bills, it's not so great for promoting indoor air quality. Today's houses are built to be very tightly sealed with high-efficiency windows and doors that prevent air leaks. Since there is no regular airflow of fresh air into your home, any pollutants that travel from the outdoors into your home get trapped indoors and often end up inside of your HVAC system where they are continually recirculated throughout your family's home.

To keep the air inside of your home cleaner and fresher, follow these tips:

Inspect Your Home for Signs of a Water Leak

While you might not immediately see why a water leak in your home will lower its air quality, this is actually a very common cause of bad air inside of a home. Leaking plumbing or faucets raises the humidity level in your home and the excessive moisture leads to the growth of harmful mold and mildew.

Take a walk around the inside and outside of your home and look for dripping faucets and other signs of plumbing problems. If you find any leaks, fix them and then remove any mold or mildew growth by spraying it with a chlorine bleach solution.

Open a Nearby Window When Using Hot Water or Cooking

When you take a hot shower, wash dishes, or cook, the steam that is produced introduces a lot of moisture into your home. You can quickly and easily release the excess steam by opening a nearby window. This simple action increases the air quality inside of your home in two different ways. The first is the open window allows the steam to escape. The second is that it lets some fresh air into your home from outside. Opening a window when you are cooking or using hot water is a must for quality indoor air.

Have Your HVAC System and Its Ductwork Cleaned

In addition to humidity problems, outdoor contaminants often build up inside of a home and contribute to lower air quality. Some contaminants that cause problems include bacteria, dirt, dust, dust mites, fungi, microbes, mold, and pollen.

To remove all of these things that have built up inside of your home's HVAC system and ductwork where you can't otherwise clean and remove them, you should have your entire ductwork and HVAC system cleaned by services such as Terry's Cleaning, Restoration & Water Damage. The cleaning company will use a brush and high-pressure vacuum to remove any contaminants present in the system and will follow up their cleaning with a disinfectant fog placed into the ducts to further kill any harmful bacteria or mold spores.
