The Best Ways To Eliminate Dog Urine On Carpets

Blog

You may have tried your hardest to housebreak your dog. But accidents happen and your dog might urinate on the carpet. When this happens, you will need to act fast to remove the stain and the odor.

When You Discover Your Dog Urinating

If the carpet is still wet because of the pet urine, you should apply white vinegar. The acid neutralizes the pet odor. Add a little white vinegar to a paper towel. Then, blot the area. Don't rub because you will rub the urine into the carpet. After the entire stain has been treated with vinegar, combine one part of water with one part of white vinegar. Pour the mixture over the stain and allow it to dry. Then, vacuum the area.

When the Urine Has Already Dried

Sometimes, you cannot find pet urine stains because they have dried, but you will notice the odor. To discover the pet urine, get a black light and turn off the lights. Run the black light over the carpet and the urine stains will be illuminated.

If the urine stain has already dried, white vinegar will not be effective. Instead, you will need to sprinkle baking soda generously. Allow it to sit for a few hours and then vacuum it. Since the urine stain can encourage bacterial growth, it is better to clean up the urine soon after the pet urinates.

If Your Dog Pees On the Carpet Often

For occasions where you don't want to wait for baking soda to work its magic, consider getting a wet/dry vacuum with a pet odor removing chemical. Choose a chemical designed to clean the type of carpet you own.

Wet/dry vacuums have a reservoir that holds your chosen cleaning chemical. The chemical is mixed with water that is sprayed onto the carpet. The water is then quickly vacuumed up by the vacuum. When the carpet doesn't look damp, press the lever that releases the cleaning chemical to dampen the carpet. Push the vacuum back and forth until the dirty water has been removed from the carpet.

When Your Carpet is Permanently Stained

Depending on the type of carpet, you may notice permanent stains after your dog urinated on it. You will then need to replace the carpet with a version that is resistant to urine stains.
